RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) began a 15-day country-wide protest against increasing costs of petroleum products and food items on Wednesday in Rawalpindi.

The PDM says it will initially stage protests in major cities around the country, following which it will determine whether to host public meetings or a long march.

Political workers and activists from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur Rehman (JUI-F) gathered in front of the Rawalpindi Press Club. They marched from Liaquat Bagh to Committee Chowk, blocking the main Murree Road for hours.

Although all of the local opposition leaders attended the protest, the number of participants was not as large as expected - some workers dressed in black placed bread around their chests to stress rising food prices. Protesters chanted slogans supporting their leaders and condemning the government.

After Friday prayers, the PDM has scheduled a more massive country-wide protest.
